Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings.

The simplest, and cheapest way to Remotely Control a Computer. It can be used on a LAN, and through the Internet.

Ultr@VNC is an Excellent, Fast & Free Remote Control, and File Transfer Program.

If you want to control a computer through the LAN, or and through the Internet it is the thing to use.

The program consists of one Installation file; during installation it would ask whether you want to install the Server or the Viewer.

Install VNC Server on each Computer that you would like to be Controlling.

During installations check Yes to the Hook Options.

Once installed leave the default as is just change the Password.

Open port* 5900 in the Router (if you use one) for the VNC Server computer. If you use software Firewall or any other application that blocs ports, open port 5900 through the additional applications as well.

Install the Viewer on the Computers that are going to be the Controllers**.

Open Port* 5900 through the system (as you did with the server).

Using Ultr@VNC.

Double click on the Ultr@VNC server. A nice Blue Diamond Icon would appear in the TrayBar.

Start the Viewer on the Controller Computer. Type the IP of the VNC Server Computer and click on the Connect.

If connected correctly the Password Box would popup. Type the password and enjoy.

Using VNC to Control a specific LAN Computer through the Internet.

A Network that uses one External IP and share the connection among computers that are configured as LAN needs a Routing agent.

In order to be able to discriminate between the computer while connecting from the outside (The Internet) the Router needs to be able to maintain a Virtual Server with ports assignment. All current Entry Level Cable/DSL Routers (Wired or Wireless are capable to function in this manner).

It is much more complicated issue to achieve a similar configuration with software Routers, most of them would not provide such a configuration. So check ahead your specific Software Router capacities.

Install VNC server on each computer that you would like to control. Assign to VNC a different port number on each computer (do not use the same port for more than one computer).

Example.

External IP address is: 68.175.19.50

Computer 1: LAN's IP 192.168.1.10 VNC configured to use port 5810
Computer 2: LAN's IP 192.168.1.20 VNC configured to use port 5820
Computer 3: LAN's IP 192.168.1.30 VNC configured to use port 5830

Open the ports for the corresponding IP number in the Cable/DSL Router's Virtual Server.

Open the same ports in the software Firewall of the corresponding computers.

When connecting from the outside type into the VNC Viewer the external IP:port number.

Example: Using VNC Viewer from an outside computer typing into the VNC Viewer an Internet IP address like this: 68.175.19.50:5820

This will connect you to the LAN computer 2, since port 5820 is opened only to reach this computer IP number.

This method essentially uses the unique port assignment as the Routing agent Selector and can be used for other applications too as long as you can configure the ports that the application is using.

As an example, you can use Wake on LAN (WOL) to start one specific computer on a LAN through the Internet.

* Note 1. VNC Ports - You can use other ports (I suggest to stay around the same value 5800 to 5900 ).

The port assignment can be configured in the VNC Server (upper left corner).

When starting the viewer type the port number with the IP, using a : in-between.

** Note 2. You can Install both the server and the viewer on the same computer, and use the one or the other according to what you would like to do.

The viewer is use to connect and control other computer.

The Sever is used to allow connection to the current computer.

*** Note 3. By default Ultr@VNC is not a Secure Connection, if you need the connection to be encrypted you can add a DSM Plug-in.
